Chia is starting to gain real popularity amongst health circles and for good reason. A 100 gram serving of chia seeds is a rich source of the B vitamins thiamine, niacin, riboflavin and folate. All of which are responsible for energy production in the body.
The same amount of chia seeds is also a rich source of the dietary minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and zinc.
Chia seeds may be added to other foods as a topping or put into smoothies, breakfast cereals, energy bars, granola bars, yoghurt, tortillas, bread, made into a gelatin-like substance or consumed raw. The gel can be used to replace as much as 25% of egg content and oil in cakes while providing other nutrients, making it an incredible versatile energy source.
Wanting to get a little creative? Add pomegranate, berries, coconut water and more … just add your favourite flavours for something a little different and to supercharge your energy drink.
INGREDIENTS (FOR ONE GLASS)
A large lass of cold, filtered or sparkling water
I organic lemon or lime, sliced
1 – 2 tsp Chia seeds
If sweetness is desired add any natural sweetener of your choice – stevia, rice malt syrup, honey, maple or coconut sugar
Option: add refreshing herbs such as mint and fresh berries
Add everything to the glass and mix together well
Allow the Chia Seeds to soak up as much water as possible and then stir/shake occasionally so the seeds don’t all settle on the bottom.
Add to a shaker or bottle with lid and shake to separate any sediment if drink is left to settle
Chia seeds are nutrient dense and are a great slow release energy source – helping to keep you full for longer.
Adding them to your daily glass/bottle of water is a great way to help keep you hydrated and provides a great source of natural energy
